The major goals of the high school counselor are to assist student’s master developmental tasks and to cope with critical life problems encountered during adolescence. An especially important goal is to provide students with opportunities and experiences to become productive members of the world community. The primary objectives are to assist students to:
- Acquire realistic understanding of themselves
- Resolve problems that may interfere with learning
- Develop positive interpersonal relationships
- Become self-directive
- Explore opportunities for further education, vocational training, and/or employment
- Be aware of credits for graduation requirements and their levels of attainment
- Post-secondary planning and application process
- Individual/family/school crisis intervention
- Academic planning
- Career planning
- Encourage the maximum development of each student
- Develop coping strategies
